Remote ID drones

In the EU, from January 1, 2024, it will be mandatory that all drones with the European quality mark C1, C2 or C3, as well as those in specific categories, are equipped with Remote ID

What is Remote ID?

Remote ID for drones refers to a system that allows identifying and tracking unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, while they are in the air. The primary goal of implementing Remote ID is to improve safety, security and accountability in the fast-growing drone industry.

A drone with Remote ID continuously broadcasts a signal to the environment, which contains information that allows the drone to be identified. This signal is sent via WiFi or Bluetooth. Remote ID functions efficiently, but has a limited range. You can only detect the drone when you are within the range of the signal.

Explanation how remote-id works.

Safety and Security:

Remote ID contributes to overall airspace safety by allowing authorities to quickly identify and locate a drone in the event of an incident or violation of airspace regulations. It also helps reduce security concerns by providing transparency on drone activities.

Implementation of remote id:

The specific requirements for Remote ID may vary by country or region. Some countries may require drones to broadcast their identification information in real time, while others may use network-based solutions for remote identification.

Identification and Tracking:

Remote ID enables the identification of drones and provides information about their location during flight. This information may include the drone's serial number, location, altitude, speed and the location of the operator.

Regulatory Compliance:

Many aviation authorities around the world are considering or have already introduced regulations requiring drones to be equipped with a Remote ID system. This helps authorities monitor and manage airspace to ensure safe coexistence between manned and unmanned aircraft.

Privacy Considerations:

Because implementing Remote ID involves collecting and transmitting information, privacy considerations are crucial. Finding a balance between the need for identification and protecting individual privacy is an ongoing challenge in the development and adoption of Remote ID systems.

Compliance deadlines:

Drone manufacturers and operators may need to meet deadlines for compliance with Remote ID regulations set by aviation authorities. It is essential that drone users remain informed of the applicable regulations in their region.
